Brackett Brieden Backflush Filter during backflushing operation

The fluid to be filtered flows through the inlet connection into the lower half of the filter body (1), upwards through the turntable (6) into the inside of the filter elements (2).

Flowing from the inside to the outside of the debris filter elements, the solids are retained on the inside of the filter elements.  The clean fluid then leaves the filter body through the upper outlet connection.

The requirement to backflush is initiated by timer of rising differential.  When the signal to backflush is given, one complete backflush cycle would be performed automatically.

Backflushing is achieved without interruption to the flow through the debris filter. The drive (5) rotates the turntable (6) and the backflush valve is opened (8).  Each element in turn moves across the backflush outlet pipe (7). The difference in pressure between the inside of the filter body and atmospheric pressure produces a reverse flow through the filter elements thereby removing the retained debris.

Design and Construction of Brieden Automatic Backflush Filter
The filter body design is based on BS5500 for pressure vessels as a minimum standard and can be designed and manufactured to specific requirements with third party verification. The standard construction is either carbon steel with epoxy or rubber lining, or Stainless steel.  Filter bodies can be fabricated in other materials if required.

Selecting the correct filter
The choice of debris filter is dependant on the site operating conditions and the filtration requirements of the system.  The following factors should be taken into consideration.

  • Type of fluid to be filtered
  • Flow rate
  • Level of filtration
  • Volume of solids to be removed
  • System pressure

The following tables give an indication of the Brieden Automatic Backflush Filters capacities based on typical cooling water applications with solids loading of 50 to 100 mg/l.  For larger capacity filters, other applications or for further information see the contacts section for contact information.
